Chuba Akpom Credits Ipswich’s “Big Ambitions” For Transfer
Super Eagles-eligible striker Chuba Akpom has revealed why he chose Ipswich Town over several suitors after completing a season-long loan move from Ajax, according to Soccernet.ng.
The 29-year-old forward was at the centre of one of the summer’s most dramatic transfer battles, with Birmingham City, Middlesbrough, and Olympiakos all pushing for his signature.
Per TalkSport, Birmingham had even agreed to a loan deal and scheduled a medical before Ipswich hijacked the move, completing their own medical and securing his services.
Speaking to TownTV, as cited by Ipswich Town’s official site, Akpom said Ipswich’s ambition and playing style made the decision straightforward.
“I was really excited when I heard of the interest, and I’m delighted to have joined a club with such big ambitions,” he said. “I watch a lot of football and have always thought Ipswich would suit my style, so this move makes perfect sense.”
Akpom, who previously featured for Ajax and played in the Champions League with Lille, believes his European experience will be invaluable in the Championship promotion race.
“I have had lots of good experiences over the last few years, at Ajax and playing in the Champions League with Lille, and I feel like all of these have improved me as a player and helped me be the person I am now,” he added.
The former Arsenal academy product has vowed to contribute both on and off the pitch.
“I’m here to do as much as I can do to help the team, in the changing room and on the pitch, and I’ll bring a winning mentality here.”
Ipswich’s loan deal includes an obligation to buy—reportedly around £7 million—if they secure promotion to the Premier League this season.
