NSC Confirms Tinubu’s Plan To Reward Former Super Falcons
United States-based former Nigerian international, Patience Avre-Odeli, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may soon host the United Ex-Super Falcons at the Presidential Villa in Abuja as part of efforts to honour the team’s historic contributions to Nigerian football.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Avre-Odeli disclosed that the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, have given assurances that the matter is receiving the attention of the Presidency.
“I am happy to disclose that I, on behalf of United Ex-Super Falcons, have had fruitful discussions with the NSC Chairman (Dikko) and DG (Olopade), and they have assured us that our demands for adequate compensation by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the honours we brought to Nigeria in our active years and which past governments failed to recognize, are being considered,” she said.
The former Super Falcons forward emphasized that the contributions of her generation laid the foundation for the present successes enjoyed by the team.
“It must be remembered that my generation of Super Falcons laid the foundation stone of the success the current players are building upon, and the sacrifices we made should not be forgotten so soon,” Patience added.
The United Ex-Super Falcons consist of players who won five consecutive CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) titles for Nigeria in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006. Many of them featured in tournaments held alternately in Nigeria and South Africa.
Their legacy helped build a winning culture that led to Nigeria’s further triumphs in 2010, 2014, 2016, and most recently, the 2018 and 2022 editions of the tournament, the latter won by the current generation of Super Falcons in Morocco.
Patience Avre-Odeli expressed hope that their long-standing appeals for recognition and reward will finally be addressed by the Tinubu administration.
The agitation for their reward reached a new height after the 2025 set of Super Falcons who won the Morrocco 2024 edition were rewarded with National Honours, Flats in Abuja and a naira equivalent of hundred thousand dollars.
