UEFA Delays Decision On Anderlecht vs. Sheriff Venue
As reported by HLN, Anderlecht are requesting that UEFA moves the return fixture of the sides Europa Conference League qualifier against Sheriff away from the Moldovan sides home ground in Tiraspol. The Moldovan side play in the semi-autonomous region of Transnistria, on the border with Ukraine and Russia. As a result, the area is considered high risk by Belgium’s Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Anderlecht would prefer not to play there, but for now UEFA have not made a decision.
It is strange that nothing has been decided, given that Utrecht were able to get their clash with the same opposition moved to another city in Moldova, Nisporeni. The Dutch side were victorious over two legs, and perhaps that is why UEFA feel reluctant to make a decision now. The national stadium in Chisinau is also an option. For Anderlecht, clarity is required for arranging the trip, while it is also frustrating for fans wanting to travel to support the team.
Anderlecht will hope they can win the first leg comfortably at home, having already seen their Europa League qualification end early at the hands of BK Hacken.
