NPFL Warns Players, Officials Of Severe Penalties For Betting On Matches
The NPFL issues a strict warning banning players and officials from betting on league matches, with violators facing expulsion, fines, and suspensions to protect the integrity of Nigerian football.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has issued a strong warning to players, officials, and all individuals affiliated with its clubs, emphasizing a strict ban on betting activities related to NPFL matches.
In a circular dated August 6 2025, addressed to the Chairmen and General Managers of all NPFL clubs, signed by Davidson Owumi sighted by our correspondent, the league reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on betting, stressing that any involvement in such activities undermines the integrity of the game and threatens the credibility of the league.
The Nigeria Premier Football League emphasized that betting by players, coaches, club staff, and other affiliated individuals is strictly prohibited, aligning with both its internal regulations and global standards for professional football conduct.
“The NPFL will not tolerate any form of betting by players, club officials, or any other individuals associated with our member clubs,” the circular read.
The circular outlined the dangers of betting, particularly focusing on:
Match-Fixing: A threat to the core values of fair competition and sporting integrity.
Reputational Damage: Participation in betting can tarnish the image of individual players, clubs, and the league itself.
Sanctions for Violators
Severe penalties await those found guilty of betting-related offenses:
Expulsion:
In accordance with Article 15.5 Section B of the NPFL Framework and Rules, violators risk permanent expulsion from NPFL activities.
Fines and Suspensions:
Additional punitive measures, including financial penalties and temporary suspensions, may be imposed as per Section C of the same framework.
The NPFL reaffirmed its commitment to fair play and transparency, urging all stakeholders to uphold the highest ethical standards both on and off the pitch.
To ensure accountability, the NPFL encouraged confidential reporting of any betting-related misconduct, assuring all whistleblowers of anonymity and protection.
“The NPFL assures all clubs, players, and officials that any information reported will be treated with confidentiality,” it stated.
With the new season approaching, the NPFL is doubling down on efforts to maintain the integrity of the league. All clubs, players, and officials are expected to adhere strictly to the anti-betting regulations and report any suspicious activities through the appropriate channels.
