Greenwood Bags 11-Minute Hat-Trick In Marseille Rout
Mason Greenwood was on top form for Marseille as the former Manchester United forward scored a pre-season hat-trick in a 5-0 victory.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In the first half of a pre-season trouncing of third-division Dutch side Excelsior Maassluis, Greenwood struck his first goal in the 28th minute and had secured the match ball just 11 minutes later, as reported by Foot Mercato. Marseille led by five at the break and that way it would stay at full-time, as head coach Roberto De Zerbi made a full eleven changes at half-time and the likes of Greenwood were substituted.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Greenwood already looks to be carrying on his goalscoring form shown in his debut campaign in Ligue 1, when he scored 21 goals in 34 league appearances in the most prolific season of his career so far. He has been linked with major European heavyweights like Atletico Madrid as a result.
DID YOU KNOW?
Greenwood may play a starring role in a six-part documentary about Marseille’s 2024-25 season, which is being released on the club’s YouTube channel. In the latest episode, the 23-year-old striker was on the end of a furious rant by head coach De Zerbi.
WHAT NEXT FOR GREENWOOD AND MARSEILLE?
Greenwood may yet be on the move this summer, with a potential return to La Liga touted one year after his successful loan spell at Getafe. But he might feel he would like to continue what he has started in the south of France, having helped De Zerbi’s side qualify for the Champions League, and could have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a strike partner next season as the former Arsenal man has reportedly agreed to return for a second spell at Marseille.
