Super Falcons Unveil Squad Numbers For WAFCON

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have confirmed the official squad numbers for their 24-woman team heading into the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), according to Soccernet.ng.

The tournament kicks off on Saturday, July 5, with hosts Morocco taking on Zambia at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

Nigeria, nine-time winners and Africa’s most successful side, begin their Group B campaign on Sunday against Tunisia in Casablanca. The group also features Algeria and Botswana.

Among the headline numbers, first-choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has retained her fondness for No. 16, leaving the No. 1 shirt for veteran shot-stopper Tochukwu Oluehi.

Former Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala, one of the biggest stars in the tournament, will wear her trademark No. 8 shirt, while American-born Ify Onumonu continues with No. 9.

Surprisingly, new entrant and forward Rinsola Babajide has been handed the No. 2 shirt — a rare choice for an attacker. The UD Tenerife attacker is heading for her first major tournament with Nigeria.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who continues to lead the side with remarkable consistency, stays loyal to her No. 15 jersey. Midfield dynamo Christy Ucheibe, blessed with a bit of her flair and creativity, takes the iconic No. 10 shirt.

Elsewhere, dependable defenders Osinachi Ohale, Ashleigh Plumptre, and Michelle Alozie take Nos. 3, 5, and 22 respectively. Toni Payne, a fan favourite for her intelligent midfield plays, reclaims her familiar No. 7 shirt.

The Falcons, under immense pressure to reclaim their African crown after losing the 2022 edition to South Africa, are gunning for a record-extending 10th title.

While South Africa remain strong contenders, hosts Morocco and Zambia are eager to make history of their own by clinching their first-ever WAFCON trophy.
