Rangers Confirm Signing Of Super Eagles-Eligible Defender
Scottish Premiership giants Rangers FC have officially announced the signing of Emmanuel Fernandez from English side Peterborough United.
The Super Eagles-eligible defender joins the Scottish giants on a four-year deal from English side Peterborough United.
Joining the Light Blues on a permanent basis, Fernandez becomes the latest addition to Russell Martin’s squad ahead of the 2024/25 season.
“We are today pleased to announce the signing of Emmanuel Fernandez on a four-year deal from Peterborough.” Rangers wrote on their official social media page.
His arrival comes shortly after the departure of veteran Nigerian defender Leon Balogun. But Fernandez’s signing offers Martin’s squad a fresh injection of potential in the heart of defence.
The Super Eagles prospect, full name Emmanuel Olusegun Opeyemi Fernandez, was born in England to Nigerian parents with Yoruba roots.
The centre-back now becomes a new ally to Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers, who has continued to shine in Glasgow following his impressive performance for the club in their last campaign.
Having started his professional journey with Brentford, Fernandez moved to Peterborough in 2021 after brief spells at Gillingham and Ramsgate.
It was last season in League One that he truly came into the spotlight, making 42 appearances and scoring five goals.
His standout performance against Everton in the FA Cup third round, where he held his own against Premier League opposition, drew interest from several European clubs, including teams in France and Germany.
However, Rangers beat off the competition to secure his signature.
While he has not yet represented Nigeria at any level, his eligibility could make him a future consideration for the Super Eagles if his form continues north of the border.
