Ex-Chelsea Fullback Abu Joins Southampton’s Sister Club In France
French club Valenciennes have officially announced the signing of tri-national fullback Derrick Abu.
Abu has moved to France following the expiration of his contract with Valenciennes’ partner club in England, Southampton.
Eligible for Nigeria, Germany and England, Abu has signed a two-year contract with Valenciennes, who have a club option for the 2027-2028 season.
The right-back began his career at Coerver Coaching Performance Academy before joining Chelsea at U11 level.
The defender spent eleven years at Chelsea, making 32 league appearances across the club’s U18 and development sides before his release at the end of the 2022-2023 season.
Abu was a member of the Chelsea team that clinched the Premier League U16 International Tournament title in 2019.
The following year, he earned his only international caps to date, making two appearances for England’s U17 side.
Speaking after his deal with Valenciennes was sealed, Abu stated: “I’m delighted to be here where the project suits me perfectly. I grew up playing for Chelsea and then I joined Southampton.
“And now I’m in France, I’m getting out of my comfort zone, I’m playing abroad. I want to surpass myself at this club so we can reach new heights.
“I have an attacking profile but I like to help the team in all areas. I defend well and I can play in several positions.”
Abu gained his first taste of senior football during a loan spell at Harrogate Town in the second half of the 2023-2024 season, making 14 appearances in League Two.
