Flying Eagles Begin Final WAFU B U-20 Prep In Abuja
Nigeria’s U-20 men’s team, the Flying Eagles, have regrouped in Abuja for the final leg of preparations ahead of the maiden edition of the CAF WAFU B U-20 Boys’ Cup, set to take place in Accra, Ghana, from July 10 to 23, 2025.
The team had earlier broken camp following the postponement of the tournament but resumed after new dates were confirmed by the organisers.
Head Coach Aliyu Zubairu is overseeing the training camp, which includes a blend of players who were instrumental in securing Nigeria’s qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, as well as fresh faces eager to impress.
Nigeria will compete in Group A alongside hosts Ghana and Benin Republic. They kick off the competition with a high-profile clash against Ghana on July 10, followed by a second group match against Benin on July 13.
Group B comprises Niger, Togo, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals.
The WAFU B tournament, which aims to enhance regional cooperation and provide a platform for emerging talent in West Africa, also serves as a critical build-up for Nigeria’s Flying Eagles ahead of their bigger global test — the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile from September 27 to October 19.
Zubairu’s side, who secured World Cup qualification by finishing third at the 2025 U-20 AFCON in Egypt, will face Colombia, Norway, and Saudi Arabia in Group F of the World Cup.
With the countdown now on to both continental and global challenges, the Abuja camp presents a final opportunity for the Flying Eagles to fine-tune tactics, build chemistry, and assess squad depth ahead of a busy second half of the year.
