England will defend their title against Germany in the final of the UEFA U21 European Championship on Saturday in Bratislava, as two of Europe’s elite youth systems prepare to clash once again.
The Three Lions secured their place in the final thanks to a dramatic brace from Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, including a stunning late solo goal to cancel out Noah Ohio’s spectacular long-range equaliser for the Netherlands just minutes earlier.
Germany cruised past France 3-0 in the other semi-final, with Nelson Weiper, Nick Woltemade, and Brajan Gruda all on target. They also edged England 2-1 in the group stage and remain unbeaten in their last 20 matches.
Their last defeat? England, in the group stage of the 2023 tournament – a competition the Young Lions ultimately won.
This rematch sets the stage for a high-quality final, with both squads boasting significant top-level pedigree. England’s central defender Jarell Quansah recently sealed a £35 million move to Bayer Leverkusen, while Arsenal’s teenage prodigy Ethan Nwaneri is valued at €50 million. Spurs’ €41 million man Archie Gray adds further experience to a side decorated with high-level experience despite their youth.
Germany, however, are no less stacked. Towering forward Nick Woltemade, with six goals and three assists in four appearances, has reportedly attracted serious interest from Bayern Munich. He was rested in the group match against England, but will start in the final as he pushes for Player of the Tournament honours.
With Harry Kane not getting any younger and original target Florian Wirtz now at Liverpool, Woltemade could be the German talisman the club need to lead its front line for the next decade.
With talent, history, and momentum on both sides, Saturday’s final promises to be a compelling showdown between two of the most dominant forces in European youth football.
