Two Nigerian Boxers Eye Gold At African Military Championship
Team Nigeria remains in strong contention for top honours at the 6th African Military Boxing Championship in Rabat, Morocco, as two Nigerian boxers push for gold with the competition drawing to a close this weekend.
The Nigerian Armed Forces, have already secured four bronze medals at the ongoing championship, which commenced on June 14 and is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, June 22.
Rilwan Lawal of the Nigerian Army has advanced to the final, raising hopes of clinching Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal at the prestigious military tournament.
Lawal’s performance has been a standout highlight in Nigeria’s campaign and represents the nation’s best chance at gold.
Fellow army boxer Gbadamosi Quadri is also in contention, having reached the semi-final stage of his weight class. A victory in the semis would see him join Lawal in the final and give Nigeria another shot at a gold medal.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s medal tally currently includes four bronze medals — a testament to the depth and determination of the squad across all branches of the military.
Balogun Emmanuel Adeola of the Nigerian Air Force secured bronze following a spirited run in his division. Nigerian Army fighters Samson Kazeem and Ambrose Godwin also earned bronze medals for their performances.
Akeem Adebamiji added to the tally for the Nigerian Navy, ensuring that all three arms of the Nigerian Armed Forces are represented on the podium.
However, not all Nigerian competitors progressed beyond the quarter-final stage. Qoyum Qozeem of the Nigerian Army and Balogun Al-Ameen Olamide of the Air Force were both eliminated in the last eight.
Coach Kehinde’s Olympic pedigree has been instrumental in the team’s solid showing in Morocco, with the Nigerian boxers exhibiting technical discipline, grit, and competitive edge throughout the tournament.
As the championship reaches its climax, the focus shifts to Lawal’s gold medal bout and Quadri’s crucial semi-final, where victories could elevate Nigeria’s commendable outing to a historic triumph on the African military boxing stage.
