Paul Onuachu Set To Join Mikel Obi’s Former Club
Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu is set to join a new club this summer, according to Soccernet.ng.
Onuachu has not quite cut it at Southampton since his €18 million transfer from Belgian club Genk two years ago.
Injuries, managerial changes, and the club’s instability have dealt him a bad hand, as he has been limited to just 40 games in two seasons.
The 31-year-old marksman got a bit of joy two seasons ago, when he moved to Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor. He contributed 17 goals and four assists in 25 games.
At the end of the loan deal, Trabzonspor wanted to sign Onuachu permanently, but Southampton’s asking price was too high, causing the Turkish club to back off.
However, the speculations about a possible move have not ended, especially since Southampton got relegated from the Premier League last season.
But there has now been a breakthrough. This is as transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Trabzonspor have agreed on a fee with Southampton for the sale of Onuachu.
The Turkish club will pay €8 million to Southampton. But the only detail left is personal terms, which won’t cause a problem since Onuachu has history with the former Turkish Super Lig champions.
In the coming days, the deal should be finalized, and Onuachu will be confirmed as a Trabzonspor player.
The club have had a number of Nigerian players play for them over the years. Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi played for the club after leaving Chelsea.
They have also had other players like Ogenyi Onazi, Isaac Promise, Augustine James, and Victor Shaka.
