Women’s AFCON: Ajibade Urges Concentration Despite Short Prep
Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has called on her teammates to remain focused and determined despite the limited number of preparatory matches ahead of the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
In a recent media interaction, Ajibade acknowledged the challenges the team is facing in terms of preparation.
She noted that while the squad would have preferred more warm-up matches, the focus now is on maximizing the use of the resources and time available.
“It’s true we haven’t had as many friendly matches as we wanted,” she said. “But we have a strong group, experienced players, and a clear goal. We have to stay mentally strong and work hard with what we have.”
Nigeria, a record nine-time winner of the WAFCON, will be among the tournament favorites but face increasing competition from nations like South Africa, Morocco, and Cameroon, whose women’s programs have received more consistent support in recent years.
Ajibade emphasized the team’s collective spirit and ability to adapt under pressure. “We’ve been in tough situations before and come out strong.
The team knows what’s at stake, and we are committed to giving our best to bring the trophy home.”
The 24-year-old Atletico Madrid forward has emerged as one of the team’s most reliable performers in recent years, especially following the retirement of several senior players.
Her leadership and work ethic have been widely praised both by teammates and fans.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has faced criticism for inadequate support for the women’s team, particularly around funding, logistics, and scheduling. Despite these challenges, Ajibade remains optimistic.
“The focus has to stay on the pitch. That’s where we can make the most impact. We want to win, and we will fight for that no matter what,” she concluded.
