Agu: Childhood Idols, World Cup Sparked Super Eagles Move

Super Eagles and Werder Bremen defender, Felix Agu, has told Soccernet.ng the Nigerian footballer he adored while growing up.

The 25-year-old represented Germany at the U-21 level but was recently cleared to switch allegiance to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, although he didn’t feature in their 2-1 win over Ghana in the Unity Cup semi-final.

In an interview with Soccernet.ng, the former VfL Osnabruck defender revealed he played offensively as a younger footballer, hence, he didn’t look up to any Nigerian defenders growing up.

“I didn’t particularly look up to defenders, it was more of looking up to players like Jay-Jay Okocha when I was younger because I wanted to be more offensive, but when i stepped back it wasn’t Nigerian defenders I looked up to,” the attacking full-back revealed.

Quizzed about his favourite memory of the Super Eagles, Agu chose Nigeria’s 3-2 loss against Argentina in the final group game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup at the Estádio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

“The most of the memories I have are from the World Cup games that I watched was maybe the game against Argentina where Ahmed Musa scored two goals and I always thought we might win, it was such a great game.”

“To go back and forth with a team like Argentina that had Messi shows how much of a great game it was,” Felix Agu concluded.

While he didn’t make his debut against Ghana, Agu’s first appearance in the green and white colours of Nigeria could come in the Unity Cup final against Jamaica.
