Ansu Fati is close to agreeing a deal to leave Barcelona on a loan-to-buy basis, according to a new report.
Fati was once regarded as one of the top wonderkids in world football but has now found himself all but ostracised from Barcelona’s line-up.
He has made just six La Liga appearances this season, and has been an unused substitute on 15 different occasions in Barcelona’s last 19 matches.
Fati’s progress was derailed significantly after he ruptured the meniscus in his left knee at the age of just 18 in 2020 – an injury which kept him out for almost a year.
A loan spell at Brighton last season proved largely unsuccessful and there was an expectation that Barca would sell him upon his return.
That did not happen, but Fabrizio Romano reports that a major European club has agreed terms with the La Liga champions to sign him.
He claims that Ligue 1 side Monaco are in negotiations over an initial loan move for the 22-year-old winger, which would include a buy option clause as part of the deal.
Barca would then have a sell-on clause, meaning they would receive a percentage of the transfer fee if Monaco later decide to sell Fati to another club.
It is added that the player himself is keen on the move, which would allow him the opportunity to receive regular first-team football.
Fati’s frustrations at his current situation were made clear last month.
During Barcelona’s thrilling 4-3 comeback win over Celta Vigo, Fati was sent to warm up by manager Hansi Flick but was eventually not brought on.
He responded by throwing off his bib and kicking a nearby water cooler as he was once again left as an unused substitute.
Ansu Fati kicked a cooler after Flick used all his changes and didn’t call him to play vs. Celta Vigo.
He has received 10 caps for Spain but hasn’t been called up to a squad since 2023, meaning he missed out on his country’s Euro 2024 success last summer.
The 22-year-old, who turns 23 in October, will hope a move to Monaco can begin to revitalise his career.
