Nigeria Will Host The 2025 WAFU B U-17 Championship, Where The Golden Eaglets Aim To Regain Past Glory
Nigeria have been confirmed as hosts of the 2025 WAFU B U-17 Championship, with matches set to be played in Ogun State this September, according to Soccernet.ng.
The announcement was made in a statement by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after the body’s President Ibrahim Musa Gusau paid a courtesy visit to the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in Abeokuta.
Two venues will stage the regional competition — the newly upgraded MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta and the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.
Both stadiums are equipped to host international fixtures, with the NFF commending the state’s “excellent serenity” and “world-class sporting infrastructure.”
The regional championship will feature West African nations including Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger Republic, Benin, and Togo, alongside hosts Nigeria.
Importantly, the tournament will double as the qualifying event for the 2025 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, making it a crucial platform for scouting the next generation of African football talent.
Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets, who have missed out on the last two FIFA U-17 World Cups and failed to qualify for the 2025 U-17 AFCON, will be looking to redeem themselves on home soil.
The five-time U-17 World Cup champions and two-time African champions will aim to reignite their legacy in front of their home fans.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons to face Cameroon
In addition to the boys’ tournament, the Super Falcons will return to action for the first time since November 2024 with a pair of friendly matches against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses. Ogun State will also host these encounters.
The first fixture will be held at the Remo Stars Stadium on Saturday, 31 May, with the return leg scheduled for Tuesday, 3 June, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
These matches form part of Nigeria’s preparations for the rescheduled 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, now set to kick off in Morocco on 5 July 2025.
