NSC Chairman Dikko Backs World Soccer Legends’ Charity Match
The National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, has declared full support for the global campaign against cancer, as he welcomed the Main Organising Committee (MOC) of the World Soccer Legends’ War Against Cancer to the NSC headquarters.
Led by National Coordinator Jacob Onu and Special Adviser HRH Alhassan Yakmut—former NSC Director-General—the committee presented its work plan ahead of the charity football match slated for October 4, in commemoration of UN World Cancer Day.
Mallam Dikko, a long-time advocate of cancer awareness, expressed strong commitment to the cause. “I have been part of the Cancer Walk in Abuja for over a decade. In 2017, I headlined the event and brought in legends like Nwankwo Kanu, Tijani Babangida, and Peter Rufai for the Medicaid Cancer Charity Match. This is a fight we must all join,” he said.
He assured the committee of the Commission’s full backing, stressing that cancer should not be seen as the responsibility of the health ministry alone. “We must collaborate to make this World Soccer Legends’ Charity Match a success,” he added.
Mr. Onu revealed that several renowned African football legends are on board for the awareness match and emphasized the plan to engage corporate sponsors to raise crucial funds. “This will tackle the health challenges we face and promote awareness on a large scale,” he noted.
Supporting the initiative, the SSA to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Adeyinka Adeboye, praised the committee’s dedication and highlighted the importance of the NSC’s involvement to accelerate progress.
With strong institutional backing and star power from the continent’s football greats, the War Against Cancer match is set to unite sports and advocacy in a powerful message of hope and health.
