Sweden Sensation Aberg Claim Second PGA Tour title
Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg sensationally holed four birdies in his final six holes to claim his second PGA Tour title with victory at the Genesis Invitational.
The 25-year-old finished a stroke clear of Maverick McNealy after a tight tussle at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
Aberg, who moves up to fourth in the world with this win, started the round three behind the overnight leaders, while McNealy was five back.
American McNealy holed a 38-foot par putt on the first and then had nine birdies in his next 12 holes as he raced three clear of the field.
However, a bogey on the 14th gave Aberg a window of opportunity and after getting up and down from a bunker to save par on the 12th, he went on a run of three successive birdies and followed two pars with a winning seven-foot birdie putt on the last.
“It was awesome, it was a great fight,” said Aberg, who closed with a six-under 66 to win on 12 under.
“I felt like I was in control of the ball flight all day and really proud of the way that I finished, it was really cool.
“The [par] putt on 12 was big because I think at that point the lead was at 12 [under] and it was a putt to stay at eight.
“It was so much fun coming down the last few holes trying to win a tournament, it is a really special feeling.”
McNealy’s 64 saw him finish second on 11 under, two shots clear of joint overnight leader Patrick Rodgers, who failed to close out a first PGA Tour win in 286 attempts.
Successive bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes derailed his challenge as he finished with a 71 to end joint third alongside world number one Scottie Scheffler, who signed for a 66.
Scheffler briefly held a share of the lead going into the back nine, but he will be left to rue his 76 in the third round.
England’s Tommy Fleetwood posted a 68 to finish joint fifth on eight under.
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who played with Scheffler in the final round, had a level-par 72 as he remained at three under.
