African Games: Nigeria return to second after Day 8

After picking just one gold, five silver, and one bronze medal on Day 8 of the ongoing African Games in Ghana, Nigeria have returned to second position on the medal table with South Africa dropping to fourth while Algeria took third place, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Nigeria had dropped to third place after Day 7 of the event with 54 medals (22 gold, 13 silver and 19 bronze) but some measure of success achieved on Day 8 saw the West African nation return to second on the table behind Egypt.

South Africa, who won three gold, two silver and one bronze on Day 7, and were second on the table dropped all the way to fourth on the table as they failed to claim a single medal on Day 8.

Second to third place are still some distance off Egypt, who lead with 134 medals, which comprises 76 gold, 31 silver and 27 bronze medals.

After increasing their Day 7 total medals of 81 to 86 on Day 8, Algeria moved up to third position while Tunisia maintained their fifth position with nine gold, 20 silver and 29 bronze medals.

Mauritius, Eritrea, Madagascar, Morocco and Cameroon complete the top 10.

Meanwhile, host country, Ghana, are 16th on the medals table with just one gold, three silver and one bronze
medal.
