Eguavoen takes charge of Super Eagles following Jose Peseiro exit
Under the Portuguese coach’s guidance, Nigeria participated in the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast. However, despite reaching the final, Peseiro’s team fell short of clinching the title, with Sebastien Haller sealing victory for the opposing side as the Eagles finished second best.
The contract of the former Porto manager expired in February, leading to his departure from the Super Eagles.
Hours later, it is understood that Augustine Eguavoen, the team’s technical director, will assume interim control of the three-time AFCON champions until a permanent arrangement is established by the NFF.
Eguavoen, a former right-wing back for the Super Eagles, previously took charge of the Nigerian team during the AFCON 2021 tournament in Cameroon, following the departure of former coach Gernot Rohr.
Interestingly, it was Eguavoen who handed over to Peseiro when he first landed the Super Eagles job. As part of his responsibility as the Nigeria Football Federation technical director, he will lead the team for upcoming engagements.
Nigeria was earlier scheduled to face Argentina in an international friendly game later this month, but that game has been canceled. The Eagles are now seeking a new opponent for the FIFA window to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers in June.
