Manchester United have ‘made contact’ to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.
The Red Devils are on the lookout to sign a new forward this summer and they have identified Tel as a potential transfer target. The 18-year-old has been a bit-part player since he joined Bayern for £25million from Rennes in July 2022, starting just seven matches during his time in Bavaria so far.
And according to Sky Germany, United have opened talks for the Frenchman and are ‘very interested’ in signing him at the end of the season. It’s claimed that two more English clubs have also enquired about Tel in the last two weeks, although the identity of those teams haven’t been revealed.
Despite struggling for regular game time at Bayern, Sky add that Tel doesn’t want to give up as he has ambitions of becoming a legend at the Allianz Arena. But if he doesn’t feel that Bayern believe in him for the future, then he will consider his options – though a loan move will not be one of them.
Tel is one of the most exciting prospects in Europe but he hasn’t been able to showcase his ability on a regular basis following his big-money transfer. After playing 600 minutes during the entirety of his debut campaign, Tel has been used a little more frequently this term, clocking up 731 minutes.
But Tel, who is predominately a winger or a centre-forward, is still firmly behind Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane in the pecking order. Bayern’s recent dismal run of form could see Thomas Tuchel shuffle his pack, after losing back-to-back matches against Bayer Leverkusen and Lazio.
Following Wednesday’s Champions League defeat at Lazio, Tuchel was reported to have delivered a withering dressing room rant at his players saying “you’re not as good as I thought, then I just have to adapt to your level.” The result increased the pressure on Tuchel, who admitted he was “not worried” about his future in his post-match press conference.
Even though Tel has not started as many games as he would have hoped, he has still scored 12 goals in 54 appearances for Bayern. Speaking on his future in November, Tel told L’Equipe: “I’m not frustrated by my game time. But I’m definitely working to get a starting spot.
“Today, I have a super-sub status, but that’s not what I’m looking for in the long term. But that’s where we are now, and I’ll continue to learn in order to have a more important place within the team. I’m following the principle that, to become big, you have to learn to be small. It comes through learning.”
United signed Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta last summer but are eyeing up another forward to support him. Victor Osimhen and Michael Olise are among the players who have been linked with a move to the Red Devils as they look to bolster their attacking department this summer.
