N20m Jackpot For Grabs As YUCATECO Boxing League Begins
Organisers of the maiden edition of the YUCATECO Boxing League have announced that a total of 8 boxing clubs made up of 16 fighters each will participate in the competition which kicks off on November 6, 2023, at the Gymnasium Hall of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), National Stadium Surulere, Lagos.
The clubs are Akil Boxing Club, Progreso. Tizimi, Conkal, Green Grace Farmer Market, Angulo Siete, Espital and YS Rano Boxing Clubs.
Disclosing this to the media during a press conference to herald the round-robin championship, Chief Executive Officer of YUCATECO Boxing Promotions, Omole Yakubu Imadu stated that the competition will be in line with Olympic-style boxing while all the clubs are affiliated with the Lagos State Boxing Association.
According to him, the first two days will be at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos after which action moves to Ikorodu from November 10- 11 and Agege on the 17-18 November after which it will move to other states of the country.
Explaining the modalities for the league, the Edo State-born boxing promoter stated that boxers will be gaining points fighting in each venue with the overall winning club going home with a whopping N20 million.
Imadu further explained that the best fighter in each category will win N300,000 while the first and second runners-up will get N200,000 and N100,000 respectively with the Most Valuable boxer getting handsome reward just like the best referee and coach.
Also, the Technical Director of the competition Babatunde Laguda explained that there will be five weight categories namely; 51 kg, 57 kg, 63.5 kg, 71 kg and 75 kg including three weight categories for the challenge contest.
He stated that part of the reason for organising the league was to help in talent discovery. He assured fans that they’ll be treated to the best of amateur boxing during the novel boxing challenge.
