Kanu Won’t Give Up On Enyimba Despite Crashing Out Of CAF Champions League
Chairman of Enyimba International Football Club of ABA, Nwankwo Kanu has said that he won’t give up on the team despite early exit from the 2023 CAF Champion League at the weekend.
Enyimba could not live up to expectations at home against their Al-Ahly Benghazi of Algeria opponents as they were held to a barren draw in a game that they were condemned to win.
The People’s Elephants, as Enyimba are popularly called lost the first away at Benghazi with 3-4 scoreline.
Kanu, former captain of Nigerian Super Eagles, who just took over at Enyimba few weeks ago, said the loss of going forward on the continent is painful but the team have to brace up for the future challenge by putting the early ouster in the CAF Champions League behind them.
“The loss was disappointing, but we have to go home with the positives. If you watched the game you will see that we did create chances, it’s not like they did better than us, they had only one shot at goal. The people of Nigeria supported us. If you look at the stadium you’ll see that it is full, that is a good sign of a good beginning,” Newspathfinder quoted the FIFA ambassador to have said after the match in Aba at the weekend.
Kanu charged his boys to put their heads up and then know that sometimes in life you fall and you stand up.
“Let’s not discourage them, we need to support and encourage them to do better next time,” he said.
On the way forward for the former African and Nigerian Champions, Kanu said the team will definitely go back to the drawing board because a lot worka lie ahead.
“One has gone. Now we have the league and the African league so, yes we have to do more. We have to get more players to join the ones that we do have. All the same, the sporting director, the coaches and the players themselves have to work harder because this is not the best start. I believe this will fire them to do more,” he said.
