Tokyo athletes could face expulsion if they breach Covid-19 rules

The team that will represent Nigeria at the Tokyo Olympics will comprise about 80 athletes who will participate in the 10 sporting events the country qualified for.

The events Team Nigeria will participate in include wrestling, judo, taekwondo, table tennis, badminton, male/female basketball, track and field, weightlifting and rowing, canoeing and sailing.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Minister of Sports and Youths Development, Oluwakemi Areola.

The statement said, “The Ministry @NigeriaFMYS has unveiled a comprehensive plan for @NigeriaOlympic #TeamNigeria towards podium success at the #Tokyo2020Olympics.

“According to the roadmap, the final stage of local camping will commence from May-15th- July 23rd in Bayelsa, Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt. Track and Field National Olympics Trials take place June 17- 19, African Athletics Championship from June 22- 26.

“The last phase of the camping will be in Kisarazu from July 3- 23rd, while the 1st batch of athletes enters the Games Village Aug 8.

“Nigeria will present about 80 athletes in 10 Sports at the #Tokyo2020Olympics. Wrestling, Judo, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, Badminton, Male/Female Basketball are some of the events Nigeria has qualified Others are Track and Field, Weightlifting and Rowing, Canoeing and Sailing.

“Nigeria decided to narrow down her participation to sports where she has a competitive advantage in winning medals.

“Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has repeatedly maintained that @NigeriaOlympic will improve on her performance of the last two Olympics.”
