Alan Pardew Questions Michael Carrick’s Decision to Drop Bruno Fernandes After Man Utd Defeat

Alan Pardew believes Michael Carrick made the wrong call by leaving Bruno Fernandes out of Manchester United’s starting lineup, arguing that the manager could have demonstrated his authority without dropping his captain.

Manchester United’s difficult run continued with a disappointing 3–0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth, intensifying questions over Michael Carrick’s future and his handling of the squad.

One of the biggest talking points was Carrick’s decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench for the entire match. The decision followed reports that the Portuguese midfielder had criticised the manager’s tactics after United’s heavy Champions League defeat to Como earlier in the week.

Carrick reportedly described the omission as a footballing decision. However, former Premier League manager Alan Pardew believes the situation called for a different approach.

Pardew: Carrick Could Have Made His Point by Playing Fernandes

Speaking to talkSPORT, Pardew suggested that Carrick could have maintained control of the dressing room without excluding his captain from the matchday action.

Pardew explained that a manager can disagree with a player’s comments while still selecting him, allowing the team’s performance to take priority over a potential personal dispute.

He also questioned whether circumstances behind the scenes might have influenced Carrick’s decision. Without knowing what happened during training or in conversations between the player and coaching staff, Pardew said it was difficult to judge the situation definitively.

His comments highlight the delicate balance managers face when handling disagreements with influential players. Dropping a captain can send a message about discipline, but it can also create further pressure if the team fails to deliver a positive result.

Joey Barton Example Offers Pardew’s Perspective

Pardew drew on his experience managing Joey Barton at Newcastle United to explain why he would not automatically exclude a player who questioned his authority.

According to Pardew, Barton initially told him that he did not believe he was good enough to manage Newcastle. Despite the confrontation, Pardew selected the midfielder for the subsequent match against Liverpool, which Newcastle won.

Pardew said he had observed Barton’s attitude in training and believed the player was ready to contribute. The pair were subsequently able to work together without requiring a formal apology.

For Pardew, the example demonstrates why managers should assess a player’s readiness and the circumstances surrounding a disagreement before deciding on disciplinary action.

He believes the outcome against Bournemouth has made Fernandes’ omission a bigger talking point. Had United won, Carrick’s decision might have been viewed differently. Instead, the emphatic defeat has intensified scrutiny of both the selection decision and the manager’s position.

Fernandes Decision Adds to Pressure on Carrick

Manchester United’s defeat to Bournemouth has raised further questions about Carrick’s immediate future, with speculation suggesting he could be at risk of losing his position.

The timing of the Fernandes decision has added another layer to the debate. As captain and one of United’s key midfielders, his absence was always likely to attract attention, particularly following the reported disagreement over tactics.

However, the available information does not establish whether the omission was connected to a disciplinary issue, a training-ground incident or purely tactical considerations. Carrick’s stated explanation was that the decision was football-related, while Pardew acknowledged that he did not know the full details behind the scenes.

The next developments at Old Trafford could determine whether the dispute becomes a longer-term issue or fades amid wider changes at the club.

For now, Pardew’s argument is clear: a manager can assert authority without necessarily dropping a player who has challenged him. United’s defeat has made that question more difficult to ignore.

Sports Marketing International will continue to follow developments surrounding Manchester United, Carrick’s future and the situation involving Bruno Fernandes.
