Luka Modric Admits He ‘Suffered a Lot’ Against Lionel Messi in Emotional Tribute

Luka Modric has delivered a heartfelt tribute to Lionel Messi following the Argentina legend’s decision to bring his remarkable international career to an end.

The Croatian midfielder, who spent years battling Messi in some of the biggest matches in La Liga and on the international stage, admitted that facing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was one of football’s toughest challenges.

Despite their history as rivals, Modric put competition aside to celebrate Messi’s extraordinary career and the legacy he leaves behind with Argentina.

Messi’s Argentina Journey Comes to an End

Messi’s international story has officially entered its final chapter after the legendary forward said goodbye to Argentina supporters at the Estadio Monumental.

The 39-year-old marked the occasion in memorable fashion, contributing two assists and scoring from the penalty spot as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0.

The goal was Messi’s 126th for his country, adding another remarkable statistic to a career already filled with records and historic achievements.

His international retirement also closes a chapter that eventually delivered the trophy he had spent much of his career chasing.

After years of heartbreak with Argentina, Messi finally lifted the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, completing one of the biggest unfinished stories in football history.

Modric Reveals How Difficult Messi Was to Face

Modric knows better than most just how challenging it was to play against Messi.

The Croatian midfielder faced the Argentine superstar 27 times during his career, including numerous El Clásico encounters between Real Madrid and Barcelona as well as international meetings.

Modric recorded 10 victories and five draws in those matches, but Messi came out on top 12 times.

For the Real Madrid icon, those statistics only underline how difficult it was to contain a player of Messi’s extraordinary ability.

Speaking to Cadena SER, Modric expressed his admiration for his former rival while acknowledging the frustration Messi caused him throughout his career.

“It’s a shame he’s retiring, but it’s his decision and we have to respect it.”

Modric went on to praise Messi’s achievements with Argentina, particularly his long-awaited World Cup triumph.

He described the former Barcelona captain as a unique talent and admitted that competing against him was often painful.

“He’s one of the best players in the world, a one-of-a-kind player.”

The Croatian also joked about his own experience of facing Messi, saying he had “suffered a lot” against him for both club and country.

From El Clásico Battles to Mutual Respect

For more than a decade, Messi and Modric represented two sides of one of football’s greatest rivalries.

Messi was the face of Barcelona, while Modric became one of the central figures of Real Madrid’s midfield. Their meetings regularly carried enormous consequences, with domestic titles, European ambitions and individual reputations often at stake.

Yet their rivalry never prevented Modric from recognizing Messi’s extraordinary talent.

The Croatian’s comments reflect the respect that often develops between elite players who repeatedly compete against one another at the highest level.

Rather than focusing on their battles, Modric chose to celebrate the career of a player he considers one of football’s true originals.

Messi’s Emotional Goodbye to Argentina

Modric’s tribute came shortly after Messi delivered an emotional farewell to the Argentina supporters.

During his speech, Messi struggled to hide his emotions as he reflected on what representing his country had meant to him for two decades.

The Argentine icon also remembered his late father, Jorge, who passed away in August, making the occasion even more emotional.

Messi thanked the supporters for their unwavering support and reflected on his determination to continue representing Argentina for as long as possible.

He acknowledged that walking away from the national team would be extremely difficult, particularly because of the special place Argentina holds in his heart.

A Rivalry That Helped Define an Era

Messi and Modric belong to a generation that transformed modern football.

Their careers overlapped during one of the most competitive periods in La Liga history, with Barcelona and Real Madrid repeatedly fighting for domestic and European supremacy.

While Messi’s attacking brilliance and Modric’s midfield intelligence made them very different players, both became defining figures of their respective clubs and countries.

Their careers also produced a remarkable collection of individual honours and unforgettable matches.

Now, with Messi stepping away from international football, Modric’s words provide a fitting tribute from one of the few players who experienced his brilliance from the opposite side of the pitch.

Messi Leaves Argentina With Nothing Left to Prove

Messi’s international career ends with a World Cup, Copa América success, Olympic gold and a staggering collection of individual records.

For years, his relationship with Argentina was defined by near misses and criticism. But his triumph in Qatar changed the narrative permanently.

He leaves the international stage as Argentina’s all-time leading scorer and one of the most decorated players in the history of the national team.

For Modric, however, the numbers only tell part of the story.

Having spent years trying to stop Messi, the Croatian understands perhaps better than most just how rare the Argentine’s talent has been.

As one era of international football draws to a close, Modric’s tribute serves as a reminder that even the greatest rivals can ultimately recognize and celebrate each other’s greatness.
