Xabi Alonso hints at more Chelsea transfers as he reveals tactical plan for Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer

Xabi Alonso hints at more Chelsea transfers as he reveals tactical plan for Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has revealed that the Blues’ summer business is far from finished, insisting he expects further movement before the transfer window closes while outlining his tactical vision for record signing Morgan Rogers and star playmaker Cole Palmer.

Despite already spending heavily to reshape the squad, the Spaniard believes Chelsea still have work to do in both the transfer market and the dressing room.

Alonso expects more transfer activity

Chelsea have been one of the busiest clubs of the summer, but Alonso admitted that additional arrivals and departures remain likely before the deadline.

The Blues are reportedly closing in on a £52 million deal for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, with the French centre-back set to become the oldest player signed by Chelsea’s current ownership group since taking charge in 2022.

Chelsea are also monitoring Strasbourg full-back Valentin Barco as they continue to strengthen multiple areas of the squad.

Speaking about the club’s transfer strategy, Alonso stressed the importance of finding the right balance.

“We want a squad with the right balance between quality and mentality,” he said.

“Those things need to match in terms of maturity, but I think we are starting the new season with good energy. That’s important.”

Squad departures remain a priority

With Chelsea’s first-team squad approaching 40 players, Alonso acknowledged that reducing the squad will be just as important as making new signings.

Several players are expected to leave before the transfer window shuts as Chelsea look to streamline the group and provide clearer pathways for those who remain.

“We need to know that there will probably still be some movement,” Alonso explained.

“We need to be flexible and quick to act. The main thing is that we have a clear idea, a clear plan that we have built. It will probably change before the transfer window closes.”

Alonso outlines Rogers and Palmer blueprint

One of the biggest talking points surrounding Chelsea’s summer spending has been how Morgan Rogers will fit into a side already built around Cole Palmer.

Both players naturally thrive in similar attacking areas, prompting questions over whether they can coexist in the same starting XI.

Alonso, however, is convinced the pair can complement one another rather than compete for the same role.

“I have a plan. I have an idea,” he said.

“I can see them linking really well. We need to have a good mix. If we get that balance right and those special players in the right positions, with good control, then we will be more competitive with and without the ball.”

Chelsea building for another title challenge

Following another ambitious summer of investment, Chelsea appear determined to assemble a squad capable of challenging for the biggest honours in England and Europe.

Alonso’s comments suggest the club’s recruitment drive is not yet complete, while his confidence over pairing Rogers with Palmer offers supporters an early glimpse into the attacking system he hopes will define Chelsea’s new era.

With further arrivals and departures expected before the deadline, Stamford Bridge could still witness several significant changes before the 2026-27 campaign is fully underway.
