Manchester United eye Nottingham Forest star Neco Williams as Michael Carrick targets versatile defender

Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams as Michael Carrick continues to strengthen his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Wales international has emerged as one of Forest’s standout performers after being named the club’s Player of the Year for the 2025-26 campaign, with his consistent displays attracting interest from Old Trafford.

Carrick keen on versatile defender

United are expected to bolster their defensive options following their return to Champions League football, and Williams has reportedly emerged as a leading target thanks to his ability to operate on either flank.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes the Red Devils have been monitoring the 25-year-old closely and could soon formalise their interest.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said:

“Neco Williams is somebody Manchester United have been looking at. He’s somebody they really admire, and Michael Carrick is a big fan. I agree because I’ve been very impressed by what I’ve seen from him at Nottingham Forest.

“He’s got plenty of Premier League experience now, he’s performed very well at the top level and in Europe too, and he can play on both sides of the defence. Those are a few boxes ticked as far as Manchester United are concerned, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they made a move sooner rather than later.”

Nottingham Forest determined to keep him

Forest are understood to be keen to retain one of their most consistent performers and have already opened discussions over a new contract.

However, United’s renewed status as a Champions League club could prove tempting for the Welsh defender.

Brown believes the opportunity to compete regularly at Europe’s highest level may influence Williams’ decision if an offer arrives.

“From the player’s perspective, he could be offered the chance to step up into the Champions League with Manchester United, and that can be hard to turn down.

“Nottingham Forest don’t want to lose him, and we know they can be tough negotiators, but Manchester United could look to test that resolve and see what it might take.”

Contract decision could wait

Although negotiations over a contract extension are underway at the City Ground, Williams is reportedly expected to take his time before making a final decision on his future.

Waiting until later in the transfer window would allow him to assess whether Manchester United’s interest develops into a formal bid.

Brown added:

“I hear he has been in talks over a new contract, but I think if he does sign a new deal, it will be towards the end of the window after he assesses his options. He won’t rule anything out this early.”

Transfer battle to watch

Williams’ versatility, Premier League experience and impressive performances for both club and country make him an attractive option for Carrick as he reshapes Manchester United’s defence.

For Nottingham Forest, keeping hold of their Player of the Year remains a priority, but a serious offer from Old Trafford could test their resolve before the transfer window closes.
