Norway file formal complaint over Donald Trump’s role in Folarin Balogun World Cup controversy

‘I won’t let it be swept under the rug’ – Norway file formal complaint over Donald Trump’s role in Folarin Balogun World Cup red-card controversy

The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) has launched a formal complaint against FIFA following the controversial decision to overturn Folarin Balogun’s World Cup suspension. Norway believes the process undermined the integrity of the tournament after reports claimed political intervention influenced the disciplinary outcome.

Norway challenges FIFA over Balogun decision

NFF president Lise Klaveness confirmed the federation will officially challenge FIFA after the governing body overturned Balogun’s red card ahead of the United States’ Round of 32 clash against Belgium.

According to reports, FIFA’s disciplinary committee chairman, Mohammad Al-Kamali, approved the reversal without consulting the remaining members of the committee after discussions involving FIFA president Gianni Infantino and former United States president Donald Trump.

Klaveness believes the handling of the case represents a dangerous precedent for world football.

Klaveness: Football’s integrity is at stake

Speaking about the incident, Klaveness insisted the matter cannot simply disappear.

“I won’t allow this to be swept under the rug.”

She also questioned FIFA’s decision-making process.

“When you bend a rule in this manner, you put the entire game at risk. It is a major concern for football when fundamental rules are compromised.”

The Norwegian chief confirmed she intends to raise the issue formally with FIFA’s leadership.

“We know this decision was influenced by external factors and lacked proper process. This matter was so serious and troubling that I hope it encourages people to come forward without fear. I will bring it up at a board meeting and discuss it with my board.”

US Soccer defends the intervention

US Soccer CEO J.T. Batson defended the White House’s involvement in the situation, insisting there was nothing unusual about the president becoming involved.

“The president is able to do what the President wants to do.”

While the decision allowed Balogun to return for the knockout fixture, it immediately became one of the tournament’s biggest talking points.

Balogun admits controversy affected the squad

The Monaco striker acknowledged that although he was relieved to have his suspension lifted, the attention surrounding the incident created an uncomfortable atmosphere inside the United States camp.

“My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy.”

Balogun admitted his teammates also felt the pressure.

“I could almost see within my teammates a bit of nerves because it’s something that is so unique.”

He added that shutting out the public debate proved almost impossible before facing Belgium.

“The closer we got to the game, I tried to focus as best as I could, but it was difficult. There was a lot of outside noise, and that’s hard to avoid.”

What happens next?

Norway’s complaint is expected to force FIFA to explain how the disciplinary decision was reached and whether established procedures were followed.

With Klaveness determined to pursue the matter through official channels, the Balogun case is likely to remain one of the most controversial episodes of the 2026 World Cup long after the tournament has concluded.
