Guillermo Ochoa retires at 41 after joining Messi and Ronaldo in World Cup history

Mexico legend Guillermo Ochoa has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable 22-year career that established him as one of his country’s greatest-ever goalkeepers.

The 41-year-old leaves the game having featured at six FIFA World Cups, joining Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in one of football’s most exclusive clubs.

Ochoa announces retirement

After months of speculation surrounding his future, Ochoa confirmed on Tuesday that he has decided to hang up his gloves.

The veteran goalkeeper had previously revealed that the 2026 World Cup would likely be his final tournament, and he has now officially closed the chapter on an illustrious playing career.

Sharing the news on social media, Ochoa wrote:

“I gave it my all; I left everything on the field for my clubs and the national team, and today I hang up my gloves.

“Being a goalkeeper means knowing you might wait 90 minutes for a single moment when everything depends on you. And when that moment arrives, you cannot hesitate.”

A place in football history

Ochoa’s longevity is one of the defining features of his career.

By appearing at six World Cups, he joined only Messi and Ronaldo in achieving that extraordinary milestone.

Although he travelled to earlier tournaments as a young squad member, he became Mexico’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper during:

  • Brazil 2014
  • Russia 2018
  • Qatar 2022

His spectacular performances, particularly during the 2014 tournament, earned worldwide recognition and cemented his reputation as one of international football’s finest shot-stoppers.

Reflecting on his journey, Ochoa added:

“I never imagined how far a dream could take me.

“Today, I can only look back with pride and say: Thank you.

“I take with me the affection of millions and the peace of mind that comes with knowing I gave everything for Mexico.”

Emotional farewell at the Azteca

Although Raul Rangel was Mexico’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2026 World Cup, head coach Javier Aguirre ensured Ochoa received a fitting farewell.

The veteran was introduced for the final 13 minutes of Mexico’s last group-stage match against Czechia, allowing supporters at the iconic Estadio Azteca to celebrate one of the nation’s greatest footballers.

After the final whistle, Ochoa kissed the goalposts before embracing teammates in an emotional farewell.

Long after the stadium had emptied, he returned alone to the centre circle to savour one final moment on the pitch where his remarkable journey had begun.

An enduring legacy

Beyond his international exploits, Ochoa also enjoyed success at club level.

His honours include:

  • 2005 Clausura title with Club América
  • Belgian Cup with Standard Liège

More importantly, he leaves behind a legacy built on consistency, resilience and unforgettable World Cup performances that inspired generations of Mexican football supporters.

Final verdict

Guillermo Ochoa retires as one of Mexico’s greatest sporting icons.

His six World Cup appearances, countless heroic displays on the international stage and unwavering commitment to El Tri ensure his place among football’s most celebrated goalkeepers, while his name will forever be mentioned alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in World Cup history.
