Jurgen Klopp confirms Germany move is close after agreeing Red Bull exit

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he is edging closer to becoming Germany’s next head coach after reaching an agreement to leave the Red Bull group.

The former Liverpool manager revealed that the biggest hurdle has now been cleared, with only final discussions involving the German Football Association (DFB) remaining before an official announcement can be made.

Klopp says appointment is nearing completion

Klopp admitted that talks are progressing positively and believes the process is entering its final stages.

The 59-year-old joined Red Bull as Head of Global Soccer in early 2025 following his departure from Liverpool, but has now agreed what he described as a “generous” exit package that allows him to return to coaching.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Klopp could be officially unveiled as Germany’s new head coach within days if the remaining formalities are completed.

Red Bull exit clears the biggest obstacle

Speaking to MagentaTV, Klopp confirmed that his agreement with Red Bull has removed the primary barrier to taking over the national team.

“Nothing is final yet, but talks have been ongoing and everything is moving in the right direction,” Klopp said.

“I’ve reached an agreement with Red Bull, a very generous one, so there’s really nothing standing in the way.”

Despite the progress, Klopp stressed that discussions with the DFB are still ongoing.

“However, many more discussions need to take place because we’re talking to a governing body and a lot of people need to be informed,” he explained.

“Nothing has been decided, but we’re not far from being able to make an announcement. Ideally, it should happen in the next few days; the decision will be made.”

Return to management on the horizon

Should the appointment be completed, Klopp will make his return to the dugout after stepping away from management following his successful spell at Liverpool in 2024.

The move would also represent his first experience as a national team coach, taking charge of a Germany side eager to rebuild following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.

Mario Gotze backs Klopp to transform Germany

Former Germany international Mario Gotze believes Klopp possesses the qualities needed to restore the national team to the top of world football.

The 2014 World Cup final hero, who worked under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, praised his former manager’s ability to unite players and build successful squads.

“What he understands, and what most coaches may not, is how to manage people,” Gotze told The Athletic.

“Managing players, managing expectations, putting people together as a whole, he understood that in the perfect way.

“He can be very sharp about what he wants and demands. That’s why he was so successful.”

Gotze also highlighted Klopp’s philosophy of creating strong relationships within a squad.

“I read an interview when he was at Liverpool: He said he has to put people who like each other together so they can perform at 120 per cent instead of 100 per cent. That is what he did.”
