EIGHT red cards shown in chaotic USWNT vs Brazil clash as officiating blasted as a ‘complete disgrace’

The United States Women’s National Team edged Brazil 1-0 in a fiery international friendly, but the result was overshadowed by extraordinary scenes that saw eight red cards handed out during a chaotic night in Fortaleza.

With tensions escalating throughout the contest, the match descended into disorder as Brazilian players and coaching staff repeatedly clashed with officials, culminating in police intervention at full-time.

Match Descends Into Chaos

What was intended to be a showcase fixture ahead of Brazil hosting next year’s Women’s World Cup instead became one of the most controversial friendlies in recent memory.

Spanish referee Paola Cebollada Lopez issued a staggering eight red cards to members of the Brazilian delegation, including four players and four members of the coaching staff.

The first major flashpoint arrived when Brazil head coach Arthur Elias was initially cautioned before later being dismissed in the 77th minute after kicking the ball away in frustration.

As tempers continued to flare, several players became involved in heated confrontations, with defender Tarciane eventually receiving a red card in stoppage time following an altercation involving USWNT forward Sophia Wilson.

The drama continued after the final whistle, with further clashes near the tunnel resulting in additional dismissals.

Sophia Wilson Helps USWNT Secure Victory

Amid the controversy, the United States managed to secure the only goal of the evening.

The breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute when Sophia Wilson drove forward and unleashed a powerful effort that took a significant deflection off Brazil defender Isabela Chagas before finding the net.

The goal was ultimately recorded as an own goal, but it proved enough to separate the two sides in a fiercely contested encounter.

Emma Hayes’ team showed resilience under intense pressure and held firm despite the increasingly hostile atmosphere inside the Arena Castelao.

Brazil Furious With Officials

Following the match, Brazilian players directed their frustration toward the officiating team, accusing the referee and VAR officials of inconsistent decision-making.

Midfielder Angelina delivered a scathing assessment of the night’s events and suggested key incidents involving Brazil players had been ignored.

Speaking after the game, she said:

“Honestly, what happened here today is a complete disgrace.”

She continued:

“The fourth official had no idea what was happening on the field. VAR doesn’t work. It apparently doesn’t check anything.”

Angelina also claimed that comments from opposing players during the match contributed to the growing tensions on the pitch.

“One of the USWNT players gave an interview saying it was a really nice atmosphere. But on the field, she was saying we were trash, that we didn’t know how to play football. So it’s a huge lack of respect.”

Police Required At Full-Time

The hostile atmosphere reached such a level that police wearing riot gear were reportedly required to escort match officials from the field after the final whistle.

With more than 55,000 supporters in attendance, the extraordinary scenes quickly became the dominant talking point, overshadowing what should have been an important World Cup preparation match for both nations.

While the USWNT will be pleased with the result, both teams may leave the encounter with greater concern over the controversy than the football itself.
