Martin Odegaard Critics Leave Ex-Premier League And Norway Star ‘Shocked And Surprised’ As Arsenal Captain Has Morphed From ‘Boring’ To ‘Amazing’

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has once again found himself at the center of debate among football fans, but former Premier League defender John Arne Riise cannot understand why the Norwegian midfielder continues to receive criticism.

The ex-Liverpool and Norway star admitted he is both “shocked and surprised” that some Arsenal supporters still question Odegaard’s importance despite his massive influence on Mikel Arteta’s side.

Odegaard Has Become The Heartbeat Of Arsenal

Since arriving from Real Madrid in 2021, Odegaard has evolved into one of Arsenal’s most important players.

What initially began as a short-term loan deal quickly became a permanent transfer after the Gunners recognized the midfielder’s technical brilliance, leadership qualities and tactical intelligence.

Now the club captain, Odegaard has made more than 230 appearances for Arsenal and played a crucial role in helping the club return to the top of English football.

His creativity, movement and ability to control matches have turned him into the heartbeat of Arteta’s system.

Riise Defends His Fellow Norwegian

Despite Odegaard’s importance, sections of the Arsenal fanbase have occasionally criticized the midfielder, especially during periods where his goal contributions dipped due to injuries and fitness issues.

Riise believes those critics are completely missing the bigger picture.

The former Norway international praised Odegaard’s intelligence, energy and leadership, insisting Arsenal become a completely different side whenever he is on the pitch.

Riise also highlighted the midfielder’s influence beyond statistics, pointing out that his movement and ability to dictate games often create opportunities for teammates even when he is not directly scoring or assisting.

According to Riise, fans sometimes focus too heavily on numbers rather than understanding the tactical role Odegaard plays within Arsenal’s structure.

From “Boring” To Brilliant

One of the most interesting parts of Riise’s assessment was his description of Odegaard’s evolution as a footballer.

Earlier in his career, the midfielder was often labeled “boring” because of his tendency to play safe passes sideways and backwards. However, that version of Odegaard has completely disappeared.

Today, the Arsenal captain is far more aggressive and fearless in possession.

He now drives directly at defenders, plays quick combinations around the penalty area and constantly looks to create danger in advanced positions.

Riise believes that transformation has elevated Odegaard into one of the Premier League’s elite midfielders.

Real Madrid Struggles Helped Shape Him

Odegaard’s journey to the top has not been straightforward.

After becoming a global sensation at just 15 years old, huge expectations followed him to Real Madrid. However, regular first-team football proved difficult to find at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Loan spells eventually helped rebuild his confidence, especially during his impressive time at Real Sociedad before Arsenal secured his signature.

Riise praised his compatriot for handling those difficult years maturely and believes the midfielder deserves enormous credit for rebuilding his career under immense pressure.

Arsenal Need Odegaard At His Best

While Odegaard’s numbers may not have matched previous seasons, his overall influence remains critical to Arsenal’s success.

The Norwegian continues to lead by example with his work rate, composure and commitment to the team. His leadership has become even more important as Arsenal chase major honours both domestically and in Europe.

Riise also believes Odegaard will be vital for Norway as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For Arsenal fans, the message from Riise is simple: appreciate what Odegaard brings to the team beyond goals and assists.

Because in his eyes, the Arsenal captain is not just good — he is “amazing.”

Bilic returns to the national team after more than a decade away, ending a two-year absence from management as he begins a second spell in charge of his country. ## Bilic begins a second spell with Croatia The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) announced Bilic’s appointment after the Executive Committee unanimously approved the recommendation of federation president Marijan Kustic. Bilic previously managed Croatia between 2006 and 2012, guiding the national team through two European Championships before embarking on a successful club coaching career that included spells with West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion, Besiktas and Al-Ittihad. The federation believes his experience and deep understanding of Croatian football make him the ideal candidate to lead the next generation. ## Huge task replacing Zlatko Dalic Bilic succeeds one of the most successful managers in Croatia’s history. Dalic stepped down after the 2026 World Cup, bringing an end to a remarkable tenure that included a World Cup final, a World Cup semi-final and several memorable tournament campaigns. Federation president Marijan Kustic acknowledged the size of the challenge but expressed complete confidence in Bilic. > “I would like to once again thank Zlatko for the exceptional results he achieved during his tenure. It is not easy to follow in his footsteps, but we are convinced Slaven is the right person for this role.” Kustic added that Bilic’s international pedigree and extensive coaching experience were decisive factors behind the appointment. ## Bilic honoured to return Bilic described his return as the greatest honour of his coaching career and admitted he understands the expectations that come with leading one of international football’s most consistent tournament teams. > “I would like to thank President Kustic and the Federation’s leadership for the confidence they have shown in allowing me to lead the Croatian national team once again — the greatest honour for any Croatian coach.” The 57-year-old also praised the standards established under Dalic while insisting he is ready for the responsibility. > “I am fully aware of the high expectations that follow such a remarkable period under Zlatko Dalic, but anyone who takes charge of Croatia must be prepared for that because we are a football nation that lives and breathes its national team.” ## A new chapter begins Bilic now faces the task of building on Dalic’s legacy while preparing Croatia for the next international cycle. With a blend of experienced stars and emerging young talent at his disposal, Croatia will hope their returning manager can guide them to another successful era on the international stage.
