The race for promotion to the Premier League is about to become even more dramatic.
In a historic move, clubs in the English Football League have approved a major rule change that will expand the play-off system in the EFL Championship from four teams to six starting in the 2026-27 season.
The new format means that teams finishing as low as eighth place will now have a chance to fight for promotion, making the competition even more intense until the final day of the season.

For decades, the Championship play-offs have been known as one of the most exciting spectacles in football. Traditionally, only teams finishing between third and sixth place had a chance to compete in the play-offs.
Under the newly approved system, two additional teams will now join the race.
Here is how the new structure will work:
Teams finishing 7th and 8th will play eliminator matches against 5th and 6th.
Winners of those matches advance to the semi-finals.
They then face 3rd and 4th place teams in two-legged semi-finals.
The winners meet in the final at Wembley Stadium, where the ultimate prize—promotion to the Premier League—awaits.
In total, the expanded format will feature seven matches, adding even more drama to an already thrilling postseason.
The change could particularly benefit clubs like Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Wrexham’s rapid rise through the English football pyramid has been one of the sport’s most compelling stories in recent years. With this new play-off system, even if the club narrowly misses out on a top-six finish in future campaigns, it could still remain in the hunt for promotion.
