wilfred ndidi military salute celebration after scoring for besiktas on emotional return to action
There are football moments that go far beyond tactics and scorelines — and Wilfred Ndidi delivered one of them in Besiktas’ commanding 4-0 win over Goztepe S.K. in the Turkish Super Lig.
Making his first appearance after compassionate leave following the tragic loss of his father, Sunday Ndidi, the Super Eagles captain returned with both strength and symbolism — opening the scoring early and celebrating with a military salute in honor of his late father’s service in the Nigerian Army.
Besiktas boss Sergen Yalcin was unequivocal in his praise after the match:
“There’s something you probably didn’t notice today. Ndidi played perfectly.
Ndidi played one of the best games we’ve ever had.”
Beyond the emotional goal, Ndidi controlled midfield with authority — breaking up attacks, dictating tempo, and anchoring a dominant team display that pushed Besiktas into fourth place and strengthened their European qualification push.
Since his summer move from Leicester City, Ndidi has rapidly become a cornerstone at Besiktas:
20 appearances
2 goals, 1 assist
Defensive midfield leader
Dressing-room presence
His influence has extended internationally as well. Following William Troost-Ekong’s retirement, Ndidi assumed Super Eagles captaincy and played a pivotal role under coach Eric Chelle during Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 semi-final run.
Ndidi’s performance was a reminder of football’s human dimension — resilience, grief, and pride converging on the pitch. Scoring on his return was powerful. Dominating the match was extraordinary.
For Besiktas, it was three points.
For Ndidi, it was tribute, healing, and leadership in its purest form.
