Bruno Fernandes captaining Manchester United during a Premier League match
Manchester United could face a major dilemma this summer as speculation grows around the future of club captain Bruno Fernandes.
Former Liverpool and United striker Michael Owen has warned the Red Devils that replacing the Portuguese playmaker would be “almost impossible” if they decide to cash in.
With Saudi Pro League clubs continuing to circle and Fernandes entering the final two years of his contract (expiring in 2027), United’s hierarchy may soon face a high-stakes decision.
Fernandes previously rejected lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia last summer, choosing to remain at Old Trafford. However, reports suggest Middle Eastern clubs are preparing renewed approaches in 2026 as they target marquee European stars.
At 31 years old, Fernandes still operates at an elite level — but his age means United could be tempted by a substantial transfer fee.
Speaking to Metro, Owen addressed the financial versus sporting dilemma:
“It’s an interesting one, isn’t it, because of his age.
He has the skills and the experience he brings, but it’s a business, and everyone has a price. If a lot of money is coming in, someone needs to make the decision about it. He’s obviously on big wages as well.”
Since arriving from Sporting CP in January 2020, Fernandes has been Manchester United’s creative engine.
Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United:
⚽ 104 goals
🎯 99 assists
🏟️ 315 appearances
🧠 Captain and tactical leader
His direct goal involvement and leadership have been central to United’s competitiveness in domestic and European competitions.
Owen believes that level of consistency is extremely rare.
“But if he leaves, it will really hurt them.
They will need to find someone else who is really good.
Trying to replace him would be almost impossible.”
Modern football is a business, and United are no strangers to major transfer decisions. Selling Fernandes could generate significant funds to rebuild under new leadership.
However, losing a player who delivers close to 30+ goal contributions per season presents a serious risk.
Few midfielders in world football combine:
Creativity
Work rate
Leadership
Big-game mentality
Consistent output
Finding a like-for-like replacement would not just be difficult — it could reshape United’s entire tactical identity.
Manchester United are already navigating a transitional period. Selling their captain could signal a major shift in direction.
For now, Fernandes remains central to the club’s ambitions. But with contract timelines ticking and Saudi interest persistent, this story may only intensify as the transfer window approaches.
One thing is clear: if Bruno leaves, replacing him won’t just cost money — it may cost stability.
