Marc Guehi in action for Manchester City at Anfield as Liverpool fans react during Premier League clash.
Manchester City defender Marc Guehi has spoken out after receiving a hostile reception from Liverpool fans during City’s clash with the Reds at Anfield.
The 25-year-old centre-back was heavily jeered throughout the match as Manchester City secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Arne Slot’s side. Guehi’s return to Anfield came amid lingering frustration from Liverpool supporters following his failed move to the club last summer.
Guehi had come close to joining Liverpool before Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal, bowing to pressure from head coach Oliver Glasner. While the Reds were hoping to sign him as a free agent in the summer of 2026, Manchester City moved quickly in the winter transfer window, snapping him up for £20 million plus add-ons. The England international signed a five-and-a-half-year contract that keeps him at the Etihad until at least 2031.
What Guehi said
Guehi’s latest victory over Liverpool marked his fourth win against the Reds this season, having already beaten them in the Community Shield, Premier League, and EFL Cup while at Crystal Palace. This time, he played a key role in marshaling City’s defence to another win at Anfield.
Despite the boos and jeers from the home crowd, Guehi insisted he did not feel he deserved the treatment.
“Yeah, I’m not sure why, to be honest,” Guehi said when asked about the reception. “But I can’t control what their fans think of me. I’m just grateful to our fans for sticking by me and supporting me the whole game.”
The defender also acknowledged the difficulty of playing at Anfield, describing Liverpool’s intense pressing and the influence of their supporters.
“It’s not easy. Fans are on top of you,” he admitted. “You play against a team that likes to press high, but it’s always about the next action. You might make a mistake, but the next one. Always focused on the next action and how you can help your teammates.”
Guehi’s calm response under pressure capped off an impressive performance, as Manchester City continued their strong form in the Premier League title race.
