Late Nigerian footballer Saburi Adeniji of Kings Park Rangers FC
The Nigerian and English football communities are in deep mourning following the passing of Saburi Adeniji, a Nigerian footballer who died in the United Kingdom after weeks in intensive care.
Adeniji, a 26-year-old left winger for Kings Park Rangers FC, succumbed to a severe brain stem injury on Friday morning, the club confirmed in an official statement.
Saburi Adeniji played for Kings Park Rangers FC, a non-league side competing in the Eastern Counties League Division One North. Known for his energy, commitment, and positive spirit, he was regarded as much more than just a player within the club.
His condition became public in mid-January when the club announced that he had been admitted into intensive care in England. Medical reports later confirmed that Adeniji was taken to Queen’s Hospital in Romford, East London, on January 15, 2026, where doctors diagnosed a severe and irreversible brain stem injury.
In an emotional tribute, Kings Park Rangers described Adeniji as a beloved figure whose presence left a lasting mark on everyone around him.
“Ola was not just our number 17; he was family. He will forever be remembered as a loving husband, a devoted father, a loyal teammate and a true King.”
The club revealed that Adeniji showed remarkable strength during his final days, holding on long enough for arrangements to be made for his family to travel from Nigeria.
Heartbreakingly, his wife and young daughter arrived in England just one day after his passing.
As Adeniji battled for his life, Kings Park Rangers suspended their fixtures in solidarity, while players, officials, and supporters came together in support.
The club also backed a GoFundMe campaign to help reunite him with his family, as legal medical procedures in the UK delayed the withdrawal of life support after he was declared brain dead. This delay allowed his loved ones the chance to make the journey to be close to him.
Saburi Adeniji’s death is a painful reminder of how fragile life can be, even for young athletes chasing their dreams abroad.
He leaves behind a wife, a young daughter, teammates who adored him, and a football community that will not forget his name, his smile, or his fight.
