Zubimendi Shrugs Off Real Madrid Links As Arsenal Star Insists Los Blancos Are “More Than Good Enough”

Spain international Martin Zubimendi has played down long-running suggestions that Real Madrid needed a player of his profile, insisting that Los Blancos already possess more than enough quality in midfield.

The Arsenal midfielder, who joined the Gunners from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2025, made it clear that he does not believe he would have been a solution to any perceived midfield issues at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Real Madrid Interest That Never Became A Deal

Before his switch to North London, Zubimendi was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, especially after Xabi Alonso was appointed manager. Spanish media reports at the time claimed Alonso admired Zubimendi’s intelligence, positional discipline, and ability to dictate play from deep — attributes seen as ideal for Madrid’s evolving midfield.

Despite the speculation, Madrid’s hierarchy ultimately chose not to activate Zubimendi’s €60 million release clause. Club president Florentino Pérez and the recruitment team instead showed confidence in existing options such as Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga, deciding against adding another holding midfielder.

That decision opened the door for Arsenal, who moved decisively to secure a pre-agreement, matched the release clause, and structured payments to complete a five-year deal.

Thriving At Arsenal Under Arteta

Zubimendi has wasted no time making an impact in the Premier League. His calm presence and tactical awareness have added balance to Mikel Arteta’s midfield, helping Arsenal mount a serious title challenge.

The Gunners currently sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League, while also impressing in cup competitions. On Tuesday night, Arsenal sealed a 4–2 aggregate win over Chelsea to book their place in the EFL Cup final, with Zubimendi playing the full match and delivering another composed performance.

His contributions are increasingly being viewed as a key factor in what could be Arsenal’s long-awaited return to domestic glory.

Zubimendi’s Honest Take On Real Madrid

After the Chelsea victory, Zubimendi was asked whether he felt he could have helped solve Real Madrid’s midfield needs. His response was direct and refreshingly humble.

“I don’t think so. Madrid has more than enough players to do well. No way, no way,” he told Cadena SER.

Rather than revisiting what might have been, the 26-year-old appears fully focused on his present role at Arsenal — and on pushing the club toward silverware.

For now, Zubimendi looks perfectly at home in North London, while Real Madrid continue to trust the depth and quality already within their squad.
