Louis Rees-Zammit Relishes First Twickenham Test As Wales Seek Fresh Six Nations Start

Louis Rees-Zammit is never far from the spotlight. Even while sitting among 70,000 fans at the Principality Stadium last year, cameras found him as Wales endured a painful 10-try defeat to England in the Six Nations.

At the time, the 25-year-old was pursuing his NFL dream. Now back in rugby union and fully focused, Rees-Zammit is preparing for a moment he has never experienced before — representing Wales at Twickenham.

This weekend’s clash at Allianz Stadium marks a personal milestone for one of Welsh rugby’s biggest stars and offers Wales a chance to reset after a turbulent period.

A First Taste Of Twickenham In Red

Despite already boasting an impressive résumé — three Six Nations tournaments, a Rugby World Cup, and a British & Irish Lions tour — Rees-Zammit has never played England at Twickenham.

That changes now.

“We played Quins there for Bristol a couple of months back and that was unbelievable, the crowd was insane,” he said while speaking on Sarra Elgan’s Six Nations 2026 Preview.

“I’m looking forward to it. It’s the first game as well. It’s kind of the unknown with Wales… All of the boys are raring to go. There’s no bigger game than Wales England.”

For a player with 35 caps already to his name, the occasion still carries special weight.

Wales Starting With A Clean Slate

Expectations around Wales remain cautious following heavy autumn defeats, with their last Six Nations win dating back to March 2023 against Italy.

However, Rees-Zammit insists this campaign feels different under new leadership, with Steve Tandy taking charge of Wales for his first Six Nations.

“It’s like a new team coming together,” he explained.
“When you get new coaching staff and different ideas, it feels like everyone freshens up and starts from scratch.”

He believes the foundations are there — consistency is the missing piece.

“In parts, we put in some good performances in the autumn. It’s just about doing it for a full 80 minutes.”

With the 2027 Rugby World Cup looming, Rees-Zammit admits Wales are playing catch-up — but insists the squad has the quality to close the gap quickly.

Thriving As A Full-Back

Rees-Zammit’s evolution continues at club level, where he has flourished as a full-back for Bristol. The positional shift has unlocked more of his explosive pace and ball-carrying ability — something Wales are keen to harness.

“I love it. It allows me to get more touches on the ball in open field, it suits my game,” he said.

“I’m kind of seen as a 15 that can play on the wing now. It just brings something different.”

With greater freedom to attack from deep, Rees-Zammit’s confidence is clear — and his skillset could be vital against England’s defensive structure.

Rugby Needs Characters Like Rees-Zammit

Beyond tactics and positions, Rees-Zammit also spoke passionately about personality in rugby — something he believes the sport needs more of.

As one of rugby’s most recognisable figures, he understands the scrutiny that comes with standing out.

“You’ve got to try and bring your personality out when it comes to rugby, because a lot of it gets shut down,” he said.

Pointing to England’s Henry Pollock, Rees-Zammit added that individuality helps grow the game, even if it attracts criticism.

“He gets stick for it, and I got stick for it when I was younger, but you just go through it.”

As Wales head to Twickenham searching for belief, direction, and momentum, Rees-Zammit represents more than just speed and stardom — he embodies a fresh chapter and renewed hope.
