James Harden in action during NBA game wearing Los Angeles Clippers jersey
James Harden is on the brink of another major career twist, with the NBA superstar set to join the Cleveland Cavaliers from the Los Angeles Clippers in a high-profile trade that will see Darius Garland move in the opposite direction.
Although the deal is yet to receive official NBA confirmation, both sides have reportedly agreed terms, pending medicals for the players involved.
At 36, Harden remains one of the most decorated guards in NBA history. The 11-time All-Star and 2018 NBA MVP has amassed an incredible 28,805 career points, ranking ninth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Yet one major accolade still eludes him — an NBA championship.
That missing piece appears to be the driving force behind his decision to leave Los Angeles.
“I see an opportunity to win in the East,” Harden told ESPN. “They’ve got a very good team, coaching staff, all of the above. I’ve never won one before, and I think we have a better chance.”
The Cavaliers currently sit fifth in the Eastern Conference, firmly in the playoff hunt, while the Clippers are ninth in the Western Conference.
Despite speculation, Harden was quick to shut down rumours that he forced his way out of LA.
“That wasn’t the case at all,” he explained. “Sometimes in life and basketball, when things don’t work out, you just outgrow each other. It doesn’t have to be messy.”
Harden played a key role in steadying the Clippers after their disastrous 6–21 start, but he sat out Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers as trade discussions intensified.
For Cleveland, Harden brings elite scoring, playoff experience, and leadership as they chase their first title since 2016. His arrival signals a clear win-now mentality from the franchise.
The Clippers, meanwhile, acquire 26-year-old Darius Garland, who is averaging 18 points per game this season despite injury setbacks. Garland offers youth, speed, and long-term value as LA reshapes its roster.
As part of the deal, the Clippers will also receive a second-round pick in this year’s NBA Draft.
The Clippers are scheduled to host the Cavaliers on Wednesday, but neither Harden nor Garland will feature unless they successfully complete medical examinations.
If finalized, this trade could reshape the Eastern Conference playoff picture and may represent Harden’s best remaining shot at an NBA title.
