Jamie Carragher speaking on Monday Night Football about Arsenal’s attacking problems
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has pushed back against the growing narrative that Arsenal lack mental toughness, insisting the Gunners’ biggest weakness lies elsewhere — the absence of a genuine world-class attacking superstar.
Speaking on Monday Night Football after Arsenal’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, Carragher made it clear that mentality is not what’s holding Mikel Arteta’s side back.
Carragher dismissed claims that Arsenal crumble under pressure, arguing instead that the club lacks elite firepower in key attacking areas.
“I don’t think Arsenal lack mental strength; they lack quality in attacking areas. Do they have a genuine superstar in attack?” Carragher said.
According to the former Liverpool defender, Arsenal’s squad is strong, disciplined, and well-coached — but falls short when compared to teams that have dominated the Premier League in recent years.
Carragher highlighted how title-winning teams often rely on one or two elite match-winners capable of deciding games on their own.
“You think what Mo Salah did for Liverpool last season, what Erling Haaland’s done or Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City. Arsenal lack that type of player.”
While Arsenal boast several high-quality attackers, Carragher believes none currently possess the consistent, game-changing influence of the league’s true elite.
According to Carragher, the lack of a reliable attacking talisman has been a recurring issue — one that has prevented Arsenal from turning strong league campaigns into Premier League titles.
Rather than missing chances, the problem begins earlier in the attacking phase.
“I’ve always felt Arsenal’s problem is a creative one rather than a finishing one. I don’t think they create enough for any striker they have up there.”
This creative shortfall, he suggests, puts extra pressure on Arsenal’s forwards and limits their ability to dominate games against top opposition.
Despite his criticism, Carragher remains confident in Arsenal’s overall quality and still believes they are well-positioned to win the Premier League this season.
“I don’t necessarily think Arsenal have got much better in the last couple of years. I actually think Man City and Liverpool have dropped off.”
He added:
“I still think Arsenal will win the league and are the best team, but they do lack genuine world-class quality at the top of the pitch.”
Carragher’s analysis reframes the debate around Arsenal’s title credentials. Rather than questioning their mentality, he points to a missing superstar edge — the kind that turns tight matches into routine wins and near-misses into trophies.
Whether Arsenal address this gap in future transfer windows could ultimately define how long they remain on the brink of Premier League glory.
