Marseille President Reveals He Asked His Mother’s Advice Before Signing Mason Greenwood And Hints At Future Transfer Profit

Sometimes football decisions go beyond scouting reports, spreadsheets, and highlight reels. Marseille president Pablo Longoria has revealed that before completing the controversial signing of Mason Greenwood, he turned to an unexpected source for guidance — his mother.

And now, with Greenwood flourishing in Ligue 1, Longoria has hinted that Marseille could eventually cash in on the former Manchester United forward.

Greenwood’s Career Reboot In Marseille

Greenwood joined Marseille in the summer of 2024 for £27 million, following the end of his Manchester United career after serious off-field allegations — which were officially dropped in February 2023.

A successful loan spell at Getafe helped rebuild his footballing credibility, and Marseille moved decisively to secure his signature, fully aware of the public backlash that would follow.

Greenwood finished his debut Ligue 1 season as joint Golden Boot winner alongside PSG star Ousmane Dembélé, scoring 42 goals in 64 appearances across competitions — elite numbers that instantly justified the investment.

“I Called My Mother”

Speaking to The Telegraph, Longoria opened up on the emotional and ethical weight behind the decision — and why he needed advice from someone with no football incentive.

“With all the information, I called my mother and said, ‘What would you do in my position?’” Longoria revealed.
“She worked in the Spanish prison system and had all the context. And she told me, ‘Do it.’”

Longoria explained that his mother’s perspective mattered because her only concern was his wellbeing as a man, not sporting success or financial return.

“I wanted someone who didn’t have the incentive of football. Just the good of her son — as a human being.”

That approval, he says, gave him peace of mind.

Handling The Backlash

The Marseille president did not shy away from acknowledging the criticism that followed the transfer, but insisted the club acted responsibly after thorough due diligence.

“I know there is criticism. I know the reputational risk,” he said.
“But when you have all the information and believe you are making the right decision — both professionally and humanly — you can live with it.”

Longoria also described Greenwood as “a good kid” and admitted that the process allowed him to “sleep at night” knowing Marseille had acted in good faith.

Could Marseille Sell Greenwood For Profit?

While Longoria didn’t confirm any immediate plans, his comments and Greenwood’s form suggest Marseille are well-positioned to make a major profit if elite clubs come calling again.

At 24, Greenwood is back among Europe’s most productive forwards — and with transfer values driven by goals, age, and momentum, Marseille may have turned a controversial gamble into a market masterstroke.
