Xabi Alonso giving a press conference, expressing gratitude after Real Madrid dismissal
Xabi Alonso has broken his silence following his abrupt departure from Real Madrid, issuing a heartfelt statement that reflects on his time in the dugout. The former midfielder was relieved of his managerial duties just a day after Real Madrid’s 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Super Cup, yet he maintained a dignified tone and expressed gratitude toward the squad and fans.
Alonso officially addressed his exit via social media, taking the opportunity to acknowledge both the honour and responsibility of coaching Real Madrid. The 44-year-old’s tenure came to an early end following the Super Cup final, as results failed to meet the lofty expectations of the Bernabeu hierarchy.
Despite the disappointment, Alonso avoided pointing fingers or blaming circumstances. Instead, he focused on the positives of his experience and the pride of leading the club where he famously lifted the Champions League as a player.
Alonso’s relationship with some of Madrid’s star players, particularly Vinicius Junior, had reportedly been tense, with occasional benchings causing speculation about unrest in the squad. Additionally, Kylian Mbappe’s decision to wave teammates off instead of giving Barcelona a guard of honour has been cited as a symbolic indication of challenges within the dressing room.
Nevertheless, Alonso’s farewell was full of professionalism and respect. On Instagram, he wrote:
“This professional stage concludes, and it has not turned out as we would have liked. Coaching Real Madrid has been an honour and a responsibility. I thank the club, the players and above all the fans and Madrid fans for their trust and support. I leave with respect, gratitude, and pride that I did my best.”
His statement demonstrates the class and maturity that defined both his playing and managerial career, leaving the door open for his next chapter in football.
