Victor Osimhen assisting Akor Adams during Nigeria vs Algeria AFCON 2025 quarterfinal
South African football icon Teko Modise has hailed Victor Osimhen for putting the team first after the Super Eagles’ convincing 2–0 victory over Algeria, a win that sealed Nigeria’s place in the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
While Osimhen grabbed the opening goal early in the second half, it was his selfless moment for Nigeria’s second that truly caught the eye—and earned admiration from across the continent.
With Algeria chasing an equaliser, Nigeria struck decisively. Osimhen found himself in a promising position, well within range to go for glory and boost his chances of finishing as the tournament’s top scorer.
Instead, the Galatasaray striker made a split-second decision that spoke volumes about his mentality—he squared the ball to Akor Adams, who calmly finished to make it 2–0 and put the game beyond doubt.
It was a moment of maturity, awareness, and leadership.
Speaking after the match, Modise highlighted Osimhen’s intelligence and team-first attitude, even in the heat of a high-stakes quarterfinal.
“Look at this man [Osimhen], he is unselfish,” Modise said.
“As much as he is a striker that wants to be the top scorer of the tournament, he realised the ball is on his left foot, let me turn around and look for the most open man.”
The former Bafana Bafana midfielder also praised the build-up play, crediting Alex Iwobi for his vision in setting Osimhen free.
“But also the pass as well again from Iwobi, getting Osimhen in that right direction. But yet again this goal is a great goal and it will take the mic off his back because of all the opportunities that he has missed.”
In one passage of play, Nigeria showcased exactly why they are being tipped as serious AFCON contenders—teamwork, composure, and clarity of purpose.
While celebrating Adams’ goal, Modise also offered constructive advice to the young forward, urging him to be more ruthless in front of goal after missing a few chances earlier in the game.
It was a reminder that even in victory, there is room to grow—especially with tougher tests ahead.
With Algeria dispatched, the Super Eagles now turn their attention to host nation Morocco, whom they face on Wednesday in what promises to be a fiery semifinal showdown.
If Osimhen continues to combine goals with selflessness, and Nigeria maintain this level of unity, belief will only grow that AFCON 2025 could end with green-and-white ribbons on the trophy.
