Canadian Tennis Star Milos Raonic Retires at 35
Former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic has announced his retirement from professional tennis, calling himself the “luckiest person” to live out his dreams on the tour.
The 35-year-old Canadian reached the pinnacle of his career in 2016, when he defeated Roger Federer to reach the Wimbledon final, ultimately falling in straight sets to Andy Murray. That same year, he also achieved a career-high world ranking of No. 3 and reached the Australian Open semi-finals.
Raonic, known for his thunderous serve that earned him the nickname ‘Missile’, captured eight ATP tour-level titles over his career. He played his final match at the 2024 Olympics, losing in the first round to Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.
“The time has come, I am retiring from tennis,” Raonic wrote on social media.
“This is a moment you know will come one day, but somehow you never feel ready for it. This is as ready as I will ever be. Tennis has been my love and obsession for most of my life.”
Born in Titograd, Yugoslavia (now Podgorica, Montenegro), Raonic moved to Canada at the age of three. His professional breakthrough came in 2011, when he won his first ATP title at the Pacific Coast Championships.
Reflecting on his journey, Raonic said:
“I have been the luckiest person to get to live out and fulfil my dreams. I got to show up every day and focus on just getting better, seeing where that will take me, and playing a game I was introduced to at eight years old by complete luck. Somehow, this became my entire obsession and childhood, and then became my profession and life.”
Despite retiring from tennis, Raonic revealed that he is not slowing down and is ready to tackle new challenges:
“What’s next? I won’t be slowing down. There is so much more life to live, and I am as motivated and hungry as I was in 2011, when I broke through on tour. I will put the same effort and intensity into the next thing.”
Raonic’s legacy is defined by his remarkable serve, resilience on grass courts, and a career that saw him reach the very top of the sport. As he closes this chapter, tennis fans around the world salute a competitor who played with passion, power, and precision.
