Laporta Takes Swipe At Mbappe After Supercopa Snub: El Clasico Drama Off The Pitch

El Clasico rarely ends when the final whistle blows — and the Spanish Supercopa final in Saudi Arabia was no exception.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has taken a public swipe at Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe after the French forward reportedly stopped his teammates from showing respect to Barcelona following their 3–2 Supercopa defeat in Jeddah. What should have been a moment of sportsmanship quickly turned into another chapter of El Clasico controversy.

What Happened After The Final Whistle

Barcelona successfully defended their Supercopa crown after a thrilling encounter that underlined their growing dominance over their fiercest rivals. However, as celebrations began, attention shifted to Mbappe’s reaction.

The Real Madrid forward, who played despite struggling with a knee injury, was visibly frustrated at full-time. After collecting his runners-up medal, Mbappe gestured angrily for his teammates to leave the pitch, effectively preventing any form of guard of honour or acknowledgment of Barcelona’s victory.

The move sparked backlash across Spanish football — and Laporta did not stay silent.

Laporta Calls For Respect And Sportsmanship

Speaking on Catalan radio station RAC-1, the Barcelona chief described Mbappe’s actions as “surprising” and lacking the values expected at the highest level of football.

“I was surprised by what he did,” Laporta said. “In victory and in defeat, you have to be generous and respectful. This is sport, and you must maintain normal behaviour.”

Laporta stressed that Barcelona, in contrast, showed respect throughout the contest, making the reaction from the Madrid camp even harder to understand.

El Clasico Tension Still Boiling

According to Laporta, Sunday’s drama may have been fueled by lingering emotions from earlier meetings this season. He hinted that Real Madrid’s players were already “stung” before kickoff, suggesting frustration had been building for some time.

“They must have been really upset,” he explained. “That’s why they reacted that way.”

While he admitted he did not witness Mbappe’s actions live, Laporta made it clear that emotions do not excuse a lack of sportsmanship.

A Dig At Madrid’s Growing Inferiority?

Perhaps the sharpest part of Laporta’s comments was his suggestion that Real Madrid’s reaction stemmed from the realization that Barcelona were simply the better side on the night.

“They imagined they had a better chance of winning,” Laporta noted. “But they saw it for themselves on the pitch, and that is tough.”

It was a statement that cut deep — reinforcing the narrative that Barcelona are once again setting the standard in Spanish football.

Bigger Than Just A Guard Of Honour

Beyond the headlines, the incident highlights the psychological edge that defines modern El Clasico battles. When trophies, pride, and global attention collide, emotions often spill over.

For Mbappe, a player expected to lead by example, the criticism raises questions about composure in defeat. For Barcelona, the victory — and the reaction it provoked — only strengthens their belief that momentum is firmly on their side.

One thing is certain: the rivalry remains as fierce as ever, and the next chapter is already eagerly awaited.
