NFF Break Silence As Super Eagles Bonus Dispute Threatens AFCON 2025 Quarterfinal Preparations

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been hit by an unexpected off-field controversy at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, following reports that unpaid win bonuses could disrupt preparations for their crucial quarterfinal showdown against Algeria.

The situation surfaced shortly after Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 demolition of Mozambique, a result that sealed their place in the last eight and reinforced their status as one of the tournament favourites. However, what should have been a moment of momentum has now been clouded by financial concerns within the camp.

Players Threaten Boycott Over Unpaid Bonuses

According to reports, Super Eagles players and members of the technical crew are still owed win bonuses from four matches at the tournament — victories against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique.

Nigeria finished top of Group C with a perfect record before easing past Mozambique in the Round of 16, yet the agreed financial rewards are reportedly yet to reach the squad.

Sources close to the team revealed growing frustration among players, with claims that assurances were given before the tournament regarding prompt payments. As tensions escalated, the squad allegedly threatened not to train or travel to Marrakech if the issue remained unresolved.

With a high-stakes quarterfinal against Algeria looming — a fixture rich in rivalry and history — fears of a potential boycott sent shockwaves through Nigerian football circles.

NFF Clarifies Situation, Blames Banking Process

In response, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has sought to calm nerves by explaining the reason for the delay.

Nigerian journalist Tobi Adepoju (Oganla Media) revealed that a top NFF official confirmed the payments are currently being handled by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to the official:

  • The funds have already been released

  • Payments are being processed directly into individual players’ and officials’ bank accounts

  • All outstanding bonuses will be paid in full once banking procedures are completed

The federation stressed that the delay is administrative rather than intentional, urging patience as the process runs its course.

Focus Shifts To Algeria Clash

With the Super Eagles scheduled to face Algeria in Marrakech on Saturday, January 10, the NFF will be eager to see the matter resolved quickly to avoid further distractions.

Head coach Eric Chelle and his players remain firmly in contention for AFCON glory, but history has shown how off-field issues can derail on-field ambition if not handled swiftly.

For now, Nigerian fans will be hoping that cool heads prevail — and that the focus returns fully to football as the Super Eagles chase another continental crown.
