Odion Ighalo Explains Why Akor Adams Is A Different Weapon From Victor Osimhen

Super Eagles legend Odion Ighalo has singled out Akor Adams for special praise following Nigeria’s dominant 4–0 victory over Mozambique — and his analysis reveals why the Sevilla striker could be a secret weapon for the national team.

Nigeria booked their place in the AFCON quarter-finals in style, with Victor Osimhen scoring twice, Ademola Lookman continuing his fine form, and Akor Adams finally opening his account at the tournament.

While Osimhen grabbed headlines with another brace, Ighalo believes Adams’ overall contribution deserved just as much attention.

Ighalo Delighted For Adams’ Breakthrough

Speaking during his analysis on SuperSport, the former Watford and Manchester United striker expressed genuine happiness for Adams, stressing that the goal was a reward for his tireless, selfless performances throughout the group stage.

“I know he was and believe he is going to score in this game because he has been working so hard,” Ighalo said.

“Even giving assists and sacrificing himself for the team. When the chance came, he took it and hit it very hard, and it went in. So, I am happy for him; he got a goal today.”

Adams not only found the net in the 70th minute but also provided two assists earlier in the match, underlining his value beyond just goals.

Why Akor Adams Is Different From Osimhen

Ighalo was keen to clarify that Adams should not be measured directly against Victor Osimhen, as both strikers offer very different qualities.

“Not all strikers have speed. Victor is a different kind of striker to Akor,” Ighalo explained.

“He is the kind of striker that likes to keep the ball, the striker that likes to bully and fight. And if you see the game, every time he is always trying to fight, and when he gets the chance, he shoots.”

While Osimhen thrives on pace, movement, and relentless pressing, Adams brings physicality, hold-up play, and aerial presence — attributes that can be invaluable against deep-defending opponents.

A Tactical Advantage For Nigeria

Having two strikers with contrasting profiles gives head coach Eric Chelle tactical flexibility as the tournament reaches its decisive stages.

Against teams that sit deep, Adams’ ability to occupy defenders, win duels, and bring others into play could prove crucial — especially when paired with creative threats like Lookman and Alex Iwobi.

Eyes On Algeria

Nigeria will now turn their focus to a mouthwatering quarter-final clash against Algeria on Saturday, January 10, in Marrakech, a fixture loaded with history and unfinished business.

The Super Eagles will be hoping both Osimhen and Adams remain clinical as they chase a fourth AFCON title and seek revenge for their painful 2019 semi-final exit.
