Mozambique head coach Chiquinho Conde speaking ahead of AFCON 2025 Round of 16 match
Mozambique head coach Chiquinho Conde has sent a bold message ahead of his side’s Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Round of 16 encounter against Nigeria, insisting his players are ready to shock the Super Eagles.
The Mambas face Nigeria on Monday in Fez, with the Super Eagles entering the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s most convincing sides after finishing the group phase with a perfect record.
Despite the gulf in pedigree between both teams, Conde believes belief, discipline, and ambition can bridge the gap.
Speaking ahead of the crucial clash, the Mozambican tactician outlined the principles he expects his players to embody against Africa’s heavyweights.
“My principle is to show character, defend well, and attack better,” Conde said.
“We have fantastic attacking players who can decide a match at any time.”
Mozambique’s journey to the knockout stages already represents a historic milestone for the nation, but Conde has made it clear that his team is not in Fez just to make up the numbers.
Conde stressed that his side must be tactically disciplined, particularly when moving between defence and attack, if they are to stand a chance against Nigeria’s pace and power.
“We must have constructive transitions and finish the game well. The players will be calm, with no pressure,” he added.
With Nigeria boasting quality across all departments, Mozambique’s ability to manage key moments could prove decisive.
Beyond tactics, Conde highlighted the psychological side of the contest, placing emphasis on confidence and unity within his squad.
“Happy players win matches. I know my players can deliver,” he said.
“We are humble, but we also have the ambition to make history for our people and our lives. There is nothing more special than winning against a big opponent like Nigeria.”
While the Super Eagles remain firm favourites, Mozambique’s fearless approach adds extra intrigue to what promises to be a tense knockout encounter.
As AFCON 2025 reaches its decisive stages, Conde’s words set the tone for a classic underdog-versus-giant battle—one where belief may matter just as much as reputation.
